On 21 March 2026, the streets of Sydney and Wollongong became places of hope, kindness, and living faith as young people across the Greater Sydney Conference participated in Global Youth Day under the theme Communion in Action.
The day served as a reminder that following Jesus is not only about gathering together in worship, but also about going into communities to serve, love, and make a difference in practical ways.
Global Youth Day is part of a worldwide movement involving more than 5.5 million Seventh-day Adventist young people. Within the South Pacific Division, and particularly in the Greater Sydney Conference, members hold the unique privilege of helping begin this global wave of service as time zones move across the world.
This year marked the second Global Youth Day initiative for the Greater Sydney Conference, with a much stronger focus on community engagement. While previous involvement had centred largely around worship within local churches, this year young people intentionally stepped beyond church walls to put their faith into action.
The growth was significant. From just five community projects in 2025, the number increased to twenty-three projects in 2026, reflecting not only greater participation, but also a growing commitment to mission and service. Hundreds of young people took part across Sydney and Wollongong, becoming the hands and feet of Jesus in their local communities.
Pathfinders and Adventurers visited aged care homes, hospitals, and church members in need, offering encouragement, companionship, and prayer. On busy streets and at bus stops, young people distributed flowers, spoke with passers-by, and prayed with those willing to stop and connect. Others shared food and clothing with people experiencing homelessness, while groups brought music and messages of hope into the community.
Many local churches also became actively involved through practical outreach initiatives such as feeding programs, park clean-ups, and simple health checks. Each act of service, no matter how small, reflected the spirit of Communion in Action — faith expressed through love and compassion.
Beyond the activities themselves, Global Youth Day highlighted the beauty of being part of a global church united in mission. From the first hours of the day in the South Pacific to the final time zones around the world, young people chose to live out their faith in practical ways.
For many participants, the day was not simply an event, but a reminder that service is a lifestyle. Already, churches are looking ahead not only to Global Youth Day 2027, but also to ongoing community engagement throughout the year.
With grateful hearts, the Greater Sydney Conference gives thanks to God for the opportunity to serve together as one family, one team, and one church — a church committed to moving beyond its walls to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world.
