Door Knocking Safety Tips from RMS

Summary of safety advice provided by Adsafe and Risk Management Services (RMS) for Door Knocking

    Overview

As you go out and about for mission, here are a few points to keep in mind.

    1. Risk Assessment & Mitigation: Each church should ensure a formal risk assessment has been done specific to their area/community, with clear mitigation strategies and communication of risks to all participants. Perhaps you can leave flyers in letterboxes ahead of time, advising neighbours that you will be doorknocking and what time they might expect you.
    2. Clear Communication Channels: Use a transparent and inclusive platform (e.g. WhatsApp group) for real-time updates and coordination.
    3. Vulnerable People: Know who is involved, including children and individuals with special needs; adapt plans accordingly to ensure safety for all. Perform a headcount and ensure that all participants are accounted for at the end of your door knocking session.
    4. Child Supervision: Children must remain under close adult supervision at all times and should not roam or enter homes unattended.
    5. Transport Safety: Ensure safe travel arrangements—no learner drivers, correct use of seat belts, and adhere to the 2-adult rule when supervising children who aren’t your own.
    6. Safety Protocols: Visit homes only during daylight hours; never enter homes—engage from the front door and always assess property safety beforehand.
    7. Safety Around Properties: Avoid homes with warning signs, poor visibility, aggressive animals, or signs of neglect (e.g. overgrown lawns).
    8. Dealing with Threats or Injuries: Have a clear protocol for incidents—know who to notify, how, and when, including procedures for threats or injuries.
    9. Preparedness & Conduct: Equip at least one adult with a first aid kit, encourage polite conduct, respect “Do Not Knock” signs. Conduct yourselves politely, respectfully and represent Christ in word and in action. Ensure that AdSafe protocols are adhered to.
    10. Prohibited Items: Discourage use of bikes, scooters, or skates as they complicate supervision and increase risk.
