Mission2Sydney Think Tank Outcome Report 2018

REPORT | The 2018 Mission2Sydney Think Tank invited every Adventist church and school in the Conference to send their most strategic leaders to the Think Tank.

    Overview

Brothers & Sisters of Greater Sydney,

On behalf of the Greater Sydney Conference Executive Committee, the administration would like to thank you for having attended the Mission2Sydney Think Tank this past February.

Our time together in fellowship, worship, prayer and discussion was valuable and continues to have lasting effect. We were blessed by the presentations and the foci from the combined collation of ideas and thoughts. Together these are helping guide the development of the conference strategic plan, mission and vision.

There were 5 areas of strategic focus that emerged from our time together, which were:

    • Growing together: Intergenerational discipleship and transfer of figurative ownership (giving our young adults and youth the keys to the church, for example).
    • Community engagement: Finding ways to add value to our local communities to build relationship bridges however that looks for each church and member.
    • Media engagement: There is a wide array of thoughts on this.
    • Increasing spiritual temperature: Turning up the spiritual temperature of our Conference. We had our first Conference-wide prayer retreat 6-8 April and are already planning 30 days of prayer in 2019 after IGNITE with our 2nd annual prayer retreat shortly thereafter.
    • Member Empowerment: Our churches would like to empower all our members to be involved in ministry and the church mission.

During our wrap up on Sabbath evening, I shared that we were going to have a meeting on 5 May at Mountain View Adventist College with the 93 church boards of GSC. After discussion with our pastors on 12 March, we decide that this was going to be impractical, logistically difficult and not conducive to good outcomes. We’re no longer going to use this option. Instead, we have decided to do the following:

    • Invite all GSC church boards and leaders to look at the 5 outcomes from Think Tank and discuss the questions that we focused on as delegates. The boards will then send their deliberations to the Conference office where they will be integrated into the strategic plan for the next 4 years that will be presented at the 25-26 August Conference Constituency session. Some material has already been received.
    • Engage broadly with all members of GSC via social media to discuss the 5 outcomes and the questions in a closed forum.
    1. The forum will run from 7 May to 8 July on Facebook.
    2. 5 moderators will interact with those who contribute to ensure a good process is followed that is fair, comprehensive and helpful to the thinking that we’ve gathered so far in this endeavour. We will define a Christ-like social etiquette that all the members of the forum need to abide by when they are engaging in the public conversation.
    3. There will be a video posted online on May 2nd promoting this initiative and a newsletter on the same day to those for whom we have email addresses. Further, promotion will continue in our June INTRASYD to bolster the process midway through the conversation.

We’d like to invite you to participate in the online discussion as you are knowledgeable and aware of what occurred and can help the discussion by inviting as many of our members as possible to engage.

Thank you for what you’ve done already and what you’ll continue to do. It’s wonderful to know that we’re united in missional thinking as we consider ways to share the Good News here in Greater Sydney.

    In Christ,

    Terry Johnson, PRESIDENT
